Breakfast was very good. Room appeared to be clean and the bed was very comfortable. The Bull is a period house so I liked the dark oak beams and the fact that there was no vertical wall or horizontal floor in the place. The pub and restaurant part of the building on the ground floor is "lively". Too loud for some but that's the way it's advertised. Halstead is a pretty sweet and picturesque Essex market town, set in nice countryside. This in is slap bandg in the middlöe of town on the main street.

Ok I was alone staying in a double bed. Great for me but may have been tight for two, The shower was not hugely dimensioned. Nor was the room- I guessis cosy is how you would describe them. On a friday night, which is when I stayed, this inn is probably not for light sleepers. Or such folks might prefer to sleep with earplugs till about 2 in the morning. I too wished for more real ale on tap on in bottles but I guess the pub clientel generally drinks other stuff.

Nice room, good value pub food, staff very helpful.

Quite a bit of noise from the pub at night.

Owners and staff were very helpful and informative. We had originally booked for a twin room with private bath in the main Inn. Due to the weekend late night business/activity, the Inn owner felt we would be more comfortable in the annex section. We truly appreciated his judgement as we rested quite well. Room was very small for 2 people, but beds were quite comfortable.

Our room was filthy as it had cobwebs, badly stained carpet, lots and lots of embedded dirt on baseboards, in the corners of both rooms, etc. The bathroom exhaust fan was so thick with dust, I am really surprised it did not catch on fire. I was also not a fan of owners permitting their dog in the bar/dining room as she was quite furry. One small shake of her body would leave unhealthy dog hair flying all over continental breakfast items.

Shabby room, stained furniture, lack of decent parking, stale smell walking up to room, still smelled of stale tobacco even now after cigarette ban has been in place for ages.Could do with a complete deep clean or make over, realise re decorations cost money but thorough clean and cover chairs with a clean piece of material should not be too expensive.Felt like sleeping in our car, wish we had then might have seen who put a big scratch on the side of it.Oh yes also don't take a decent car with you hire an old banger then you won't have to worry about it.

        The breakfast

The hot tap in the bathroom did not work. There was a build up of dust on the ledges in the bathrooms and particularly around the extractor. There were cobwebs in the corners.

Good position in the high st, restaurants on the door step. Price was very good , pub a little loud if you choose to go to bed before 1.00am on friday or sat. Good for a short stay.

Cant be helped as it is a pub you are staying in , but can be noisy as they had loud music downstairs until 1.00am. But if you stay with this in mind there should be no other issues.

Dogs in the reception and bar area, it is not hygenic. The chairs in the bedroom were badly stained and we were reluctant to sit on them.

        Good breakfast.

Crooked floors and were only given one kew for our bedroom and none for the main door so we couldn't get in on our return from an evening wedding receptuon.

I liked the fact that this is a very old building and this is reflected in the 'quirks' of the building and the ancient layout also the beams and plaster etc

We were given a room in the front of the building and even though secondary double glazing had been fitted, the traffic noise was loud. The night we were there was very warm and the only way to cool the room was to open the sliding double glazing. This made the traffic noise very loud. We did not get much sleep The mirror in our room was broken and one of the bed side lights was also broken. Generally the whole Hotel was 'scruffy round the edges' I don't think the owners appreciate or respect the amazing historical building that they own. So much more could be made of it.

leaving. The room was not fit for human habitation.

Small room, dirty with flies, noisy electric flush toilet system that would wake the dead. Shower too small to get into. I think they did not mean to let this room out!

The lady on reception was very good

During the evenining the guy behind the bar obviously had a problem about something, we heard him swearing then he went outside and had 2 cigarettes. Later that evening the bar was very busy and the same guy said he could not serve me because there were no glasses. I stood there waiting, he then said to me why are you staring at me I have already told you I have np glasses. Another member of staff came over and served me, no problems. He spoilt was was a good stay at the Bull.

The bed was really comfortable and a good location for Gosfield where we were attending a wedding. Reception pub staff also very friendly and helpful, as had probs on checkout - wasn't made clear at the time of booking with Booked.net that this had not yet been paid for.

Apparently the website says that Sat nights can be noisy, but didn't notice this when I booked and are room was right over a speaker pumping with music with very thin floorboards and walls!

Convenience of hotel location for business meeeting location.

Indifferent service, not welcoming at all upon arrival. Treated 'just like any other business customer'. Very poor selection of real ales - none, from a pub that advertises itself as a real ale pub.
